Geotechnical Investigations
Before construction work can begin, mandatory investigations must be done to establish the subsurface geologic features of the proposed site. This investigation helps determine the structural design of a building, which is based on the geologic character of the site.
These investigations include foundation rock types, soil deposits classifications, the water table levels and so on. An investigation of this nature is of particular importance to the building’s foundation.
The Process
A site visit is conducted to establish a plausible scope of works for the investigations.
Exploratory holes are drilled or excavated to a predetermined depth depending on the proposed structure. Rock, Groundwater and soil samples are retrieved and taken to the soil laboratory.
The retrieved samples are evaluated, classified and tested for their engineering properties.
The final step in the evaluation is deducing what the engineering properties of the subsurface material collected mean in line with the proposed project.
